Upsell
What is Upsell?
An Upsell moves an existing customer to a higher-value version of what they already buy — more seats, higher usage tiers, or a premium plan — and is a primary engine of expansion revenue and net revenue retention.

Common Mistakes with Upsell
- Pushing upgrades before the customer has adopted what they already pay for — upsells land after value is realized, not before.
- Designing pricing with no natural upgrade path: if success with the product never creates pressure to upgrade, NRR has no engine.

Upsell FAQ
What is an upsell?
An upsell increases the value of an existing subscription — more seats, a higher tier, bigger limits. Because the customer already trusts the product, upsells close far cheaper than new logos and power net revenue retention above 100%.
What is the difference between upselling and cross-selling?
Upselling sells more of the same product (bigger plan); cross-selling sells a different, complementary product. Both create expansion revenue, but upsells usually come first because they ride the existing usage curve.
